✈️ Wizz Air Just Made Larnaca Even More Connected

Wizz Air has unveiled new direct flights from Larnaca to Athens (11x weekly) and Larnaca to Madrid (3x weekly), both starting in September 2026. Athens fares start from €29.99 one-way, Madrid from €55.99. The airline is also basing a 5th aircraft at Larnaca and adding around 40 new local jobs in ground and cabin-crew roles to support the expansion.
Two things to take from this. First, an 11-times-weekly Athens link is basically a double-daily — Larnaca's Greek connection just got dramatically easier and cheaper. And second, every new based aircraft is a quiet vote of confidence in Larnaca as Cyprus' main aviation hub. The departures board keeps getting bigger.
🏗️ LARNACA'S BUILDING BOOM JUST SHIFTED UP A GEAR
Licensing applications across Oroklini, Livadia and Pyla have more than doubled compared to the same period in 2025, according to the Larnaca District Local Government Organisation. The bulk of the new applications are for housing, hotels and residential complexes — including conversions of older hotels and existing buildings into new tourist accommodation. A €3 million tender for upgrading Oroklini's ageing water network is expected to follow in the coming months.
In plain terms: the parts of Larnaca district that used to feel like the "quieter side" are now where the cranes are heading. That brings money, jobs and new neighbours — and also the now-familiar conversation about traffic, infrastructure and how fast is too fast. Worth keeping an eye on if you live, work or own property in any of the three.
🚬 TWO HELD AFTER CIGARETTE BUST AT LARNACA AIRPORT
Two passengers arrested at Larnaca Airport with hundreds of packets of undeclared cigarettes in their luggage have been remanded for three days by the Larnaca district court. Customs flagged the haul during a routine baggage check; police and the customs department are now investigating possible links to wider smuggling activity.
Larnaca Airport sees a lot of suitcases, but undeclared tobacco at this scale isn't a duty-free oversight — it's a deliberate try-it-and-see. The remand sends a clear message that customs is paying attention, and the case may yet point to a bigger network behind the two travellers.
